1966 Red Mustang Returned to Owner 20 Years After Being Stolen

1966 Red Mustang Returned to Owner 20 Years After Being Stolen
News from Insurance Journal:

Betsy Montgomery, drove the same car on her 55th birthday that she drove as a 15-year-old living in south Jackson, Mississippi — a 1966 red Mustang that her dad bought from the original owner in 1973.

How she got the opportunity to do so is a head-scratching story with a fairy tale ending.

“If I wasn’t friends with her and saw it for myself, I’m not sure I’d believe it,” says Mitch Thomas, 53, a Franklin County resident who has known Montgomery for more than 30 years.

On Oct. 19, 2012, a man from California left a message on Montgomery’s home phone near Brookhaven. The man said he wanted to talk to her about “some stolen property.”

Montgomery returned his call the next day. He identified himself as Lou Koven with something called the NICB.

“Have you had anything stolen?” he asked.

“No, nothing,” she said. “Well … except a car about 20 years ago.”

“What kind of car?” he asked.

“A 1966 red Mustang,” she answered.

“Well, I have it sitting right here in California. It was about to be put on a boat to Australia where somebody bought it,” he said.

Montgomery, 56, has worked as an emergency room nurse at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson for most of her 40 years there. She isn’t shocked easily. But for several minutes after learning her Mustang was alive and well, Montgomery sat speechles…………… continues on Insurance Journal

A federal judge has sentenced a Philadelphia man to two years in prison for a botched scheme to sink a boat for insurance money.

Manh Nguyen, 59, was one of several people charged in the unsuccessful sinking of the Alexander II about 80 miles southeast of Cape May in 2009. He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to destroy a vessel on the high seas.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Nguyen and boat owner Scott Tran paid a captain and crew to sink the boat so Tran could collect $ 400,000 in insurance. The Coast Guard rescued the boat and crew.

Philadelphia man sentenced to 2 years in prison for sinking boat off Cape May …
News from NJ.com:

A Philadelphia man was sentenced today to 2 years in prison for his role in a plot to sink a fishing boat off the coast of Cape May in August 2009 to collect $ 400,000 from the insurance company that insured the boat, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.

Manh Nguyen, 59, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Renee for conspiracy to destroy a vessel on the high seas. Judge Bumb imposed the sentence today in Camden federal court.

The ship’s owner, Scott Tran, 39, of Cherry Hill, N.J., previously pleaded guilty to a similar conspiracy offense.

Authorities said Nguyen, Tran and others engaged in a scheme to sink the Alexander II so that Tran could collect on an insurance policy with State National Insurance Company. In July 2009, Tran hired a captain for the ship, whom Tran and Nguyen then solicited to sink the Alexander II in return for payment. T…………… continues on NJ.com

Still Paddling: Health Care Reform Two Years Later
News from Huffington Post:

On this, the second anniversary of the passage of health care reform, one thing seems clear. If they say, “one must have the courage to lose sight of the shore in order to discover new oceans,” then some of us are paddling the health care boat one way, while others are desperately trying to pull us back to the beach.

This month marks two years since the passage of the historic legislation known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. However, you might never know it from watching election coverage with its many lawmakers and candidates mired in heated rhetoric over the law’s merits and the benefits it has delivered.

What year is this again???

The prominent role health care reform still plays in today’s public discourse is a testament to its political usefulness. Republican candidates and lawmakers cling to campaign promises of repeal, even though the law has already made significant and life-changing inroads for portions of the American public. So, two years later, as its provisions run another gauntlet at the Supreme Court this spring, I am reminded of why I personally fought so hard for its passage to begin with.

I remember visiting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill during the days and months after my brother Eric’s death in 2009, asking for changes that would enable people with pre-existing condi…………… continues on Huffington Post

Boat sales expected to hit highest level in 5 years

Boat sales expected to hit highest level in 5 years
News from Enterprise News:

Recreational boating sales are expected to rise to their highest level since 2007 as consumer confidence improves. The increased optimism is reflected in the expanded Progressive Insurance New England Boat Show, which occupies 360,000 square feet at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in South Boston through Sunday.

This year’s exhibit space is 40 percent larger than last year’s, and the turnout from dealers and manufacturers is the strongest since 2008, said Joe O’Neal, the show’s manager.

Entry-level models, such as pocket cruiser sailboats and mini-trailers, are considered two of the strongest categories, O’Neal said. So are pontoon boats, which are primarily designed for freshwater use.

“In general, almost everybody is seeing an uptick,” O’Neal said.

Dealers are displaying 750 vessels from 150 manufacturers, with power boats accounting for about 80 percent of the inventory.

Area boat dealers say they expect a rebound in sales in 2012, part of a gradual recovery that picked up speed last year.

Sales rose 23 percent in 2011 from 2010 at Russo Marine in Medford, CEO Larry Russo said, with most of the growth coming from sales of boats 35 feet and up. Business accelerated in the last three months with nine new boat sales, triple the amount of activity the previous year.

“Those buyers are high-end, high-net-worth…………… continues on Enterprise News
