Weeklong Progressive Insurance New England Boat Show berths at Boston …
News from MassLive.com:

BOSTON — With snow on the brain and Arctic temperatures on the horizon, it’s kind of hard to imagine floating on a cabin cruiser with a fishing rod and cold drink in hand.

Or is it …

With meteorological summer just 110 days away, organizers of the 2015 Progressive Insurance New England Boat Show hope to get people’s minds off winter, if only temporarily. Hundreds of new boats and watercraft, fishing equipment, and the latest gadgets and gear will be available to buy or browse on Saturday, Feb. 14, through Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, 415 Summer St.

Organizers boast that this year’s boat show, the largest in the region, will feature appearances by Captain Dave Carraro of “Wicked Tuna” fame, the National Geographic Channel show chronicling the real-life exploits of Gloucester fishermen who hunt for bluefin tuna and giant cod.

Bigger Baltimore boat show reflects rosy industry outlook
News from Baltimore Sun:

Brian Conner hasn’t attended the Baltimore Boat Show as a dealer since the Great Recession hobbled the industry, but he’s back now, sensing opportunity in a recovering economy and a niche he might fill in the Chesapeake Bay: pontoon boats.

“This is our debut,” said Conner, owner of Rhode River Boat Sales and Rhode River Marina in Edgewater. He hopes the powerboat show scheduled at the convention center from Thursday to Sunday will launch him once again into the boat sales business, which he has shifted in and out of more than once in the last 30 years with rising and falling economic tides.

He’s bringing 10 boats — eight Bennington pontoons and two Sundance skiffs — to be displayed with about 260 others. Baltimore’s show, one of the region’s largest pleasure boat shows, has added 20 percent more space and exhibitors, reflecting overall growth in the boat business.

“This is the largest the show has been since 2008,” said show manager Tara Davis, who works for the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the recreational boating industry’s largest trade group. “There was a lot of demand with some new exhibitors that wanted space in the show.”

She said the 185,000 square feet of space will accommodate 50 boat exhibitors and 100 other companies offering an array of nautical gear an…………… continues on Baltimore Sun

Progressive Insurance Mid-America Boat Show readies for opening
News from cleveland.com:

Preparations were well underway at the I-X Center for the 56th annual Progressive Insurance Mid-America Boat Show, opening Thursday Jan. 15 and running five days through Jan. 19.

Billed as Ohio’s largest winter boating event, Kenneth Alvey, president of the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association and manager of the event, says some 300 or more boats will be displayed. On Tuesday, exhibitors were touching up paint and polishing every last detail on the assorted watercraft.

Besides all the boats to look at, climb aboard, and wistfully admire, the show offers 20 different classes and seminars about fishing, a Meet the Mermaid to be photographed with, and Capt’n Willie, The Great Lakes Pirate, who hopes to educate children about the value of the Great Lakes.

“This year’s show will cover nearly 20 percent more exhibit space with boats from
small inflatables to 45-foot motor yachts, according to Alvey. “The increase in size reflects the fact that the boating industry is recovering well from the great recession. People are buying boats again, fueled by available low-rate financing, lower fuel costs and an overall improving economy,” he added.
Another reason the boat show is growing is the introduction of new models this year. Coming out of the recession, boat builders are investing in new designs and models again. In fact, according to Alvey, visito…………… continues on cleveland.com

Non-Life Insurance Mathematics

This book offers a mathematical introduction to non-life insurance and, at the same time, to a multitude of applied stochastic processes. It gives detailed discussions of the fundamental models for claim sizes, claim arrivals, the total claim amount, and their probabilistic properties. Throughout the book the language of stochastic processes is used for describing the dynamics of an insurance portfolio in claim size space and time. In addition to the standard actuarial notions, the reader learns about the basic models of modern non-life insurance mathematics: the Poisson, compound Poisson and renewal processes in collective risk theory and heterogeneity and Bühlmann models in experience rating. The reader gets to know how the underlying probabilistic structures allow one to determine premiums in a portfolio or in an individual policy. Special emphasis is given to the phenomena which are caused by large claims in these models. What makes this book special are more than 100 figures and tables illustrating and visualizing the theory. Every section ends with extensive exercises. They are an integral part of this course since they support the access to the theory. The book can serve either as a text for an undergraduate/graduate course on non-life insurance mathematics or applied stochastic processes. Its content is in agreement with the European 'Groupe Consultatif' standards. An extensive bibliography, annotated by various comments sections with references to more advanced relevant literature, make the book broadly and easiliy accessible.

Norwalk Boat Show has plenty to offer
News from The Advocate:

“The Times They Are A-Changing.” So wrote Bob Dylan in the fall of 1963. Truer words were never written as the times are a-changing in the newspaper world.

This week’s fishing column will mark the end of a 28-year run in the sports section of The Advocate and Greenwich Time.

And what a run it was. I wrote about the changing fish populations, a world record striped bass, a wayward manatee and hundreds of Connecticut youngsters who learned about fishing thanks to hard working and caring volunteer educators.

I will miss those wonderful stories as well as keeping you wonderful readers up to date on activities in our area.

This week’s column will feature two upcoming events may be of interest to you. The first is an event that I have reported on and helped with for many years. I will still be…………… continues on The Advocate
