Boaters’ first responsibility is safety

As boaters and marine enthusiasts we were saddened to read of the uptick in deaths on the water this season ( Aug. 10).

Boating is a passion. Once you’re away from shore and breathing in the salty air, a sense of freedom is palpable. It’s easy to get swept away in the excitement of going out for a trip without much forethought, but boaters must plan ahead to ensure they return safely and in the same good spirits.

A boater’s license is easy to obtain, but understanding weather patterns, checking mechanical and safety equipment, and most of all, taking the perils of the water seriously, are vital skills for a captain. While he or she is primarily responsible for those on board, it’s also important to train your passengers on personal safety. Not only that, but you should take a moment to remind them of how to behave and how to react to danger every time they travel on your vessel. Your guests will ultimately respect you more for your leadership and instruction.
