PARIS TN: Boat reported stolen from resort in Kentucky after owner dies

A boat was stolen from the Tennessee portion of a Kentucky resort in the past month. 

Cpl. Forrest Kemp of the Henry County Sheriff’s Department stated the theft was reported Monday at Cypress Trail Resort in New Concord.

Boat reported destroyed after Hurricane Katrina shows up in Lee County

At first it looked like possible insurance fraud, but upon further examination it seems likely no one did anything wrong regarding the boat that recently turned up in Lee County.

The boat’s original owner reported it as a total loss after it was destroyed in Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina. Lee County deputies were told the owner’s insurance company paid a $ 6,000 claim on the boat. Now the insurance company is wondering how the boat ended up registered to someone living in Lee County.

“Nobody really did anything intentional,” Lee County Sgt. Stephanie Eller said.

The insurance company never removed the damaged boat from the owner’s property, so the owner finally gave the boat to some friends free of charge, Eller said. The friends registered the boat, fixed it up and took it to Lee County – where deputies located it at Burnt Store Marina.

“It looks like it may end up being a civil issue and not criminal at all,” Eller said.
