ACE Recreational Marine Introduces Policy Discount for Safety-Concious Boat …
News from Insurance Journal:

ACE Recreational Marine, a nationwide recreational marine insurance provider and part of ACE Group, has introduced an optional endorsement that waives coverage for storm surge damage for those boat owners who are willing to move their vessels out of harm’s way, and rewards them with a potentially substantial reduction in their insurance premium.

“Owners who keep their boats on coastal waters from Maine through Texas will save the most with this new option,” said Damon R. Hostetter, senior vice president, ACE Recreational Marine. “We foresee our optional Storm Surge Exclusion endorsement appealing to boat owners who are passionate about their boats, and willing to move their vessels beyond the reach of a storm surge, waves or high tidal waters caused by a severe storm.”

Conscientious boat owners have a number of methods for preventing damage from storm surges. When size allows, they can keep their boat on a trailer and drive it to a safe location. They can also store a smaller boat in “high-and-dry” storage, or make arrangements for their watercraft to be hauled ashore at a facility with sufficient elevation to be beyond the reach of a storm surge. Owners of larger vessels may have a captain and crew to navigate their yachts out of an approaching storm’s path. By addressing the risk of damage from storm surges in advance, these boat ow…………… continues on Insurance Journal

ATLANTIC CITY – Maybe it’s the snowiest winter in recent memory that did it, or a groundhog seeing its shadow the other day.

But within two hours of the opening of the Progressive Atlantic City Boat Show, Steve Bell and his family had signed on the dotted line for a shiny, new, 18-foot, $ 40,000 Robalo 180.

And the Bells had already settled on a name for the vessel they plan to dock in Strathmere this summer: Six Bells, a sort of play on a nautical term that also signifies Bell, his wife, and their four children.

“We’ve been doing a lot of dreaming about it all winter, doing our research . . . talking about it,” said Bell, of Lancaster, Pa. “We knew what we wanted, so we got right to it.”

Embarrassing boating “moments” many recreational boat owners are likely to …
News from Lakenewsonline.com:

Landlubbers make resolutions for the New Year. Recreational boaters, however, will usher in 2014 wishing for good fishing, wind in the sail or a full tank of fuel. But that’s not all that sometimes happens on the water. Murphy and his “law” make appearances.

“It’s hard to track some of these things, because no one likes to admit it,” said BoatUS Vice President Public Affairs Scott Croft. “But based on past experience, we know some of these boating ‘moments’ will happen to boat owners in the New Year, so we’ve gathered some tools and tips to avoid these troubles.”

Hit the dock a little too hard: Wind, waves or current can foul up the best-laid docking plans. Here’s a video, “How to Dock in Four Easy Steps,” that can help improve your technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKc7ApaJCzQ. If you need more help, try the Dock-IT online docking game: www.BoatUS.com/dockit.

News from 4-traders:

07/20/2012 | 05:40pm US/Eastern

Recreational boating activity soars during warm weather months, and so do boating accidents and injuries. According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s “Boating Statistics 2011,”1 the most recent year available, there are more than 12 million registered recreational boats in the United States. With so many boaters enjoying the waterways, it is no surprise that nearly 4,600 boating accidents were reported in 2011, with far more that go unreported each year. While the number of actual boating accidents decreased by 16 incidents since last year, overall fatalities rose significantly. In 2011, overall boating fatalities rose to 758, the highest number on record since 1998. Another key statistic related to boating accidents is more than 3,040 people required medical treatment beyond first aid. In addition, the total property damage in 2011 from reported accidents was approximately $ 52 million.

Though the statistics are alarming, the risk of boating injuries and accidents can be minimized. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the vast majority of reported incidents involved factors that were within the control of boat operators. ACE Recreational Marine Insurance, one of the nation’s largest recreational marine insurance providers, and part of the ACE Group, has again released its top ten list detailing tips to he…………… continues on 4-traders

Recreational Boating Traffic Expected to Peak this Weekend
News from Best of Boating:

Getting Home Safely After the Fireworks

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – It’s not a Thanksgiving holiday traffic jam. However, for America’s boaters, it may as well be. The July 4th holiday is expected to bring record numbers of boaters to the water, jamming lakes, rivers and bays with thousands of revelers celebrating America’s birthday at evening fireworks displays. With nightfall, it also means a heightened awareness with boating safety.

“For many, this will be the only time of year they operate their boat in the dark,” said BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water President Chris Edmonston. “As you’re about to pull the hook to leave after fireworks show ends, boaters should understand that the risk of having an accident significantly increases after the sun goes down.”
