Boston Bombing Trial: Boat Owner Recalls Finding Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in …
News from NBCNews.com:

One of the first things David Henneberry did after authorities lifted a lockdown during the April 19, 2013, search for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was to go check on his boat.

What he found there brought the dragnet to a bloody, frantic end.

Earlier that day, Tsarnaev had sped away from a pre-dawn shootout with police that left his older brother, Tamerlan, dead. That showdown, four days after twin blasts had rocked the marathon’s finish line, happened less than a mile from Henneberry’s home in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Police in SWAT gear had swarmed into the small suburb, searching houses and combing yards while the rest of the Boston area came to a halt. The streets of the state capital were lifeless; Red Sox and Bruins games were canceled as television broadcast nonstop coverage.

In the early evening, as the search came up empty, Gov. Deval Patrick rescinded his “shelter in place” order and told people to resume their normal lives — but with added vigilance.

And so Henneberry stepped outside. A retired telephone company technician, he had noticed from an upstairs window that something looked amiss about his boat, a 1981 Sea Bird parked in his backyard. Two pieces of protective equipment known as chafe guards were on the g…………… continues on NBCNews.com

Grounded 53-foot boat floated, owner found
News from KeysNews.com (registration):

A 53-foot unattended boat found aground last month in Lake Surprise, just south of the Jewfish Creek Bridge on U.S. 1, has been floated and may find a new home with a new owner, according to state wildlife and Coast Guard officials.

The Grey Ghost, a 1953 vedette-style vessel made for the military during World War II, had been partially submerged in four feet of water and leaking fuel, but is now safely at anchor in the lake, said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Officer Jason Rafter.

The vessel was cleared of pollutants last month and it is now no longer an environmental hazard nor a navigational hazard as a light was also installed on the boat, Rafter said.

The Grey Ghost, will likely be moved today or Friday to an Upper Keys marina, but which one was still being hammered out as of Wednesday, Rafter said.

A group of Upper Keys boaters floated the boat using their own time and money and have an interest in taking ownership of it, but how that will be ironed out is still in the works as well, he added. Rafter said no Monroe County money was used in floating and anchoring the vessel.

The boat’s owner, who now lives in Georgia, had previously sold the vessel, but it appears the most current owner did not register it properly with the state, making for a confusing investigation, Rafter said.

“As is often the case…………… continues on KeysNews.com (registration)

Phi Phi boat owner charged for ‘aquarium in the wild’
News from Phuket Gazette:

PHUKET: An “aquarium in the wild” boat owner was fined 10,000 baht for improper use of his boat after a Facebook post criticized the operation of breaking the law.

The large fish hold of Lok Tai Taley (World Under the Water) had been converted to allow fish to swim freely into it and guests to walk among them, Maj Anurak Parinyasathiragul of the Krabi Marine Police told the Phuket Gazette.

“Counter to some of the allegations made against Nikom Ocha, the boat owner, the license for the boat had not expired; it was not a ‘glass bottom boat’; all the documents were in order and when we were there, there was no evidence of tourists catching or feeding the fish,” Maj Anurak said.

“However, the boat was being used improperly, as it had been permanently anchored in Tonsai Bay, Phi Phi, so tourists could come look at the fish, yet it was licensed only as a ferrying vessel.”

Mr Nikom was charged 10,000 baht.

“This is all the Marine Office can do,” Maj Anurak said. “However, officers from the Phi Phi National Park will come and check if the company, Phi Phi Cruiser, is breaking any national park regulations.”

The boat has not been seized or removed, Maj Anurak confirmed.

“But we will keep monitoring the boat operators. If they keep taking…………… continues on Phuket Gazette

Owner of derelict boat sought by Coast Guard

Owner of derelict boat sought by Coast Guard
News from KeysNews.com (registration):

Federal investigators are searching for the owner of 53-foot boat leaking diesel fuel and oil into Lake Surprise.

The vessel was partially submerged in four feet of water.

Good Samaritan mariners and Florida Department of Conservation Commission officers reported the boat Saturday and the Coast Guard has been trying to determine how the boat ended up where it did and exactly how much fuel leaked into the water, said Coast Guard Sector Key West Incident Management Division Chief Lt. Michelle Comeaux.

There was no one on board when crews responded, said FWC spokesman Officer Bobby Dube, who called it a derelict vessel.

“We were getting quite a lot of calls about it,” Dube said.

The Coast Guard and FWC have been working with the private company Coffin Marine Services out of Big Pine Key in containing the leak, Comeaux said.

“The FWC let us know the booms we laid down appear to be clean; however, we’re getting reports today (Tuesday) of more oil, so we’ll be investigating that as well,” Comeaux said. “When the FWC first called us, they reported a very bad situation of fuel leaking throughout the vessel.”

Coffin Marine Services had collected about 90 gallons of fuel total by Tuesday, said business owner John Coffin.

“We removed 40 gallons from the vessel and about 50 gallons from the water,” Coffin said. “It was a very…………… continues on KeysNews.com (registration)

Boat owner now trying to get his dogs back

Boat owner now trying to get his dogs back
News from CBS 8 San Diego:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Two dogs rescued from a boat found adrift off the La Jolla coast may now be looking for a new home. The owner has come forward, but he may not be able to claim them.

“Dogs are fine. They came in in really good condition, good weight and there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with them,” Department of Animal Services Lt. Kalani Hudson said.

On Wednesday, lifeguards said the dogs were left alone a mile of the coast of La Jolla in unsanitary conditions, with no water and food that was hard to get. We were curious if whoever owned the dogs would be in trouble.

“At this point because there is no physical injury to the dogs, there wouldn’t be any sort of criminal charges. Dogs are considered personal property, so we are obligated to return them to their owner,” Hudson said.

On Thursday, the dogs’ owner found us. His name is Guerillmo Cabanellas. He said on Monday he started having engine trouble and got in touch with lifeguards. On Wednesday, he left his boat and his two dogs — Captain and Princess — to row ashore and set up a tow service.

“Everything was in there for them, water, food, the works,” Cabanellas said.

But when he came back, his boat was gone, impounded by lifeguards. Now he’s fighting to get his boat and his dogs back. The problem is, he can’t afford the impound fee, or the fee to…………… continues on CBS 8 San Diego

Lynden-based fishing boat owner fined $11000 for spill

Lynden-based fishing boat owner fined $ 11000 for spill
News from Bellingham Herald:

The Lynden-based owner of a fishing vessel has been fined $ 11,000 because one of its boats spilled diesel into Elliott Bay in Seattle, the Washington state Department of Ecology announced Thursday, Jan. 15.

The Sept. 13, 2013, spill occurred while the Bristol Leader was refueling from a tank truck at Terminal 91. The spill totaled 181 gallons.

An oil spill containment boom had been placed around the boat before fueling began, so that kept most of the diesel from spreading beyond the water immediately around the 167-foot catcher-processor.

Alaskan Leader Fisheries is the boat’s owner.

The spill occurred because incoming fuel went to a partly full tank instead of empty tanks when the boat’s chief engineer didn’t follow the company’s procedures and loading plan, according to Ecology.

Alaskan Leader had no prior spills in the state, Ecology said, and cooperated with the cleanup response and investigation.

The state also billed the owner $ 3,681 for cleanup oversight and damage to natural resources.

Authorities: Owner follows, catches boat thief
News from WOODTV.com:

The scene where the driver of a pickup truck crashed after allegedly stealing a boat. (Dec. 20, 2014)

BANGOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Bangor-area man followed the vehicle that was stealing his boat until it crashed, and then chased and caught the alleged thief, authorities say.

The boat was stolen around 11:30 a.m. Saturday from a home in the 36000 block of County Road 687 near 36th Avenue in Bangor Township, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

The owner of the boat said that as he was arriving home, he saw pickup truck pulling out of his driveway hauling his duck hunting boat and trailer. The boat owner followed and called 911.

(The scene where the pickup crashed.)

As deputies were responding, the truck crashed in the area of 66th Street and County Road 376.

The boat and trailer overturned. Due to the “high rate of speed” the truck was going, the boat sustained “extensive” damage estimated at $ 10,000, authorities said.

The suspected thief tried to run away, but was stopped by the boat owner. Deputies arrived and arrested the alleged thief on charges of larceny and driving with a suspended license.
