Richard Schwartz, Who Sold Boating Group to Buffett, Dies at 85
News from Bloomberg:

(Bloomberg) — Richard Schwartz, the lawyer who founded a boat insurance and towing operation and then sold it to Warren Buffett, has died. He was 85.

Schwartz died on Feb. 11 after a short illness, according to Scott Croft, a spokesman for the Alexandria, Virginia-based Boat Owners Association of the United States.

The organization traces its roots to the 1960s when a friend of Schwartz was given a ticket for improper engine compartment ventilation while on the Chesapeake Bay, which is bordered by Maryland and Virginia. Schwartz thought it was unfair. Lamenting the absence of an advocacy group for boaters, he decided to form one.

“We’ve become the largest boat owners’ organization in the U.S. and fought major boating battles along the way,” Schwartz said in a statement at the time of his retirement in 2013. “Boating should be a pleasure – not a hassle.”

The group, known as BoatUS, moved into retail, insurance and lending and grew to have more than 500,000 members. It pushed for improved safety on waterways and opposed taxes on diesel fuel and luxury watercraft.

The insurance program was created in 1967 to provide understandable policies, rather than “unintelligible, centuries-old, commercial ship language from Lloyd’s of London,” BoatUS said in a statement Friday announcing his death.

News from MLive.com:

CADILLAC, MI – An investment group founded by Detroit Pistons’ owner Tom Gores has sold Rec Boat Holdings to the Bénéteau Group, an expansion-minded French company that is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of luxury yachts and powerboats.

Based in Cadillac, Rec Boat Holdings makes Four Winns, Glastron, Wellcraft and Scarab power boats. The company has annual sales of about $ 150 million and employs 475 people. Terms of the sale to the Bénéteau Group were not disclosed.

The company will be able “to expand its access to the European and global markets,” with its entry into the Bénéteau Group, according to a news release issued on Monday, June 23, by Platinum Equity Group, the Los Angeles investment firm founded by Gores in 1995.

“RBH has come a long way in the last four years thanks to a lot of hard work, a strong management team, great support from the dealer network and the dedication of so many committed employees,” said Platinum Equity Partner Louis Samson, who led the acquisition.

“With the turnaround complete and the business on sound operational footing, the time is right for a transition to new ownership,” Samson said.

Atlass Insurance Group Increases Liability Limits on High Performance Boats
News from ClaimsJournal.com:

Atlass Insurance Group, a global provider of commercial and marine insurance for more than 30 years, has enhanced its Prime Time Boat Insurance product, available through Atlass and other independent insurance agents nationwide.

Since Prime Time’s launch last year the product has garnered much market attention. A liability limit is now available at a million dollars, with no sub-limits. Higher limits of liability can now be offered in excess of the $ 1,000,000  limit.

“There is a significant need for a customized boat insurance product designed for the high performance and special risks market,” said company founder and CEO, Frank Atlass. “Getting feedback from clients on the policy has proved to be very beneficial, allowing us to tailor Prime Time to fill the void in the market.”

The marine insurance product is for any owner operated boats valued from $ 50,000 to $ 2 million. Prime Time insures high performance speed and fishing boats in need of full coverage, including center consoles with triple or quad outboards and high performance boats with maximum speeds up to 138 MPH.

Prime Time also insures special risks such as older boats, absentee owners and those with extended navigation needs (Central and South America, Mexico, Virgin Islands, Eastern Europe) and owners with prior claims.

If the family’s Portuguese water dog hops aboard your boat and slips on his sea legs, a new form of insurance will provide money to fix his injuries — or to pay for his funeral.

The Boat Owners Association of the U.S., or BoatUS, said Thursday it is offering new pet insurance coverage, which includes up to $ 1,000 in veterinary expenses after a pet suffers an injury while boating. The pet injury coverage comes automatically with the association’s insurance policies.

Boats are for riding the waves, soaking up the sun and reeling in that big catch. Boat owners don’t have to worry about what will happen to their boat if they have an unexpected accident, they want to be one with the water. While it’s true that boat accidents are less common than home accidents, the bottom line is when a boat accident happens, the right coverage is important.

“Some boat owners may not understand the importance of getting boat insurance. A boat is a commitment of time and money,” says Brad Seeley, Foremost® marine product manager. “A boat is a big investment to put at risk when a typical homeowners policy usually won’t adequately cover the boat.”

Rights group blasts NATO, others over sea deaths
News from WQOW TV News 18:

By SLOBODAN LEKIC
Associated Press

BRUSSELS (AP) – A European rights watchdog blasted NATO and other Western coast guards on Thursday for failing to aid a boat of migrants adrift in the Mediterranean Sea during last year’s military campaign against Libya.

A report by a Council of Europe committee said only nine of 72 people on board survived after it drifted for two weeks without assistance when its engine failed.

NATO, whose warships and maritime aircraft were patrolling the area at the time to enforce an arms embargo against Libya, rejected the accusations.

Tens of thousands of people fled Libya to neighboring countries in 2011, many of them aboard rickety boats heading for Malta and Italy. They included a large number of Africans who had either lived and worked in Libya or who were waiting for an illegal crossing to Europe.

“NATO failed to react to the distress calls, even though there were military vessels under its control in the boat’s vicinity when the distress call was sent,” said the report published Thursday.

The report said a helicopter dropped biscuits and water to the migrants but never returned, while a large military vessel came close to the boat but ignored obvious distress signals. The migrants eventually drifted back to Libya, but not before most aboard had died of exposure or thirst.

Group considers rules for rental boats
News from Charlotte Observer:

A new committee formed by the Lake Norman Marine Commission intends to propose rules governing rental-boat companies by late summer or early fall.

The committee met for the first time on March 8 and included 13 people – three from the marine commission, three lake law enforcement officers and the rest from companies that rent boats on the lake. Marine commissioner John Marino of Catawba County heads the committee. The committee was formed after a Charlotte woman was seriously injured when the propeller of a 24-foot rental piloted by an inexperienced driver ran into her last summer. The committee will recommend rules for an ordinance governing rentals on the lake, commission Chairman Ron Shoultz of Iredell County said. The ordinance could cover such issues as insurance and whether renters should be shown a brief safety video, Shoultz said after the March 12 monthly marine commission meeting at the Charles Mack Citizen Center, Mooresville. The five-member marine commission includes citizens appointed by the Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba and Lincoln county boards of commissioners. The rental boats committee could consider annual licensing of companies and whether a minimum age for renting a boat should be established, he said. The committee also could consider requiring stickers that would show officers patrolling the lake that the boat is a rental, Shoultz said.Any viol…………… continues on Charlotte Observer
