Thunderstorms complicate recovery effort following huge explosions at China’s …
News from Minneapolis Star Tribune:

TIANJIN, China — Thunderstorms Tuesday complicated recovery efforts from last week’s massive explosions at a warehouse in China’s Tianjin port that killed at least 114 people, left 57 missing and exposed dangerous chemicals — including some that could become flammable on contact with water.

Experts have expressed concern that rain could spread some of the vast quantities of hazardous material at the site or set off chemical reactions sparking further explosions. Rain began falling mid-morning, but there was no immediate word of new blasts.

Underscoring the weakness of China’s system of industrial safety, the head of the national organization responsible for those efforts has been placed under investigation for suspected “severe violation of discipline and law” — standard shorthand for corruption — the ruling Communist Party’s anti-graft watchdog said Tuesday.

No details were given about the allegations against Yang Dongliang, who was appointed head of the State Administration of Work Safety three years ago and also worked in state industry and local government in Tianjin for 18 years, including as a vice mayor from 2001 to 2012.

The storms began shortly after residents, firefighters, police, medical staff and officials held a moment of silence marking the sixth day since the disaster, the first observance in the 49…………… continues on Minneapolis Star Tribune

Surge in boat insurance claims following storms

Surge in boat insurance claims following storms
News from Practical Boat Owner Magazine:

A surge of boat insurance claims has followed recent storms and ‘the windiest month to hit Britain in 10 years’.

And now the Coastguard, Environment Agency and Met Office are again issuing weather warnings as gale-force gusts and heavy winds move across the country.

Navigators & General, one of the UK’s leading pleasure boat insurers, reported a ‘record breaking number of calls’ to its 24-hour helpline, over the Christmas period, when the worst of the recent extreme weather hit.

All available employees were deployed to man the phones at its Brighton-based contact centre.

Martin Lovell, Navigators & General claims manager, said: ‘Inevitably the adverse weather conditions have affected a large number of UK boat owners, with damage ranging from torn canopies to vessels breaking free from their moorings and unfortunately a number of storm related sinkings.

‘Our claims team have been exceptionally busy helping our customers from authorising emergency repairs to arranging salvage for the unfortunate few whose vessels came away from moorings or sunk.’

Pantaenius UK reported ‘a modest increase in claim numbers’. A spokesman said: ‘Thanks to our 24 hour emergency helpline and swift response from our surveyors, everything was dealt with rapidly.’

Peter Clark of C Claims said there…………… continues on Practical Boat Owner Magazine

BoatUS recommends checking boats in winter storage following historic cold snap

BoatUS recommends checking boats in winter storage following historic cold snap
News from Lakenewsonline.com:

With temperatures now rising after record lows across much of the nation, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) says now may be a good time to check on your boat in winter storage, and has these five tips to ensure old man winter is kept at bay:

1. How low can she go? If your boat is stored in the water over the winter, are all of the above-water thru-hulls still well above the waterline? The weight of snow and ice can submerge above-waterline thru-hulls, including the exhaust (inboard boats), so start shoveling if you notice she’s sitting lower in the water — plastic shovels and brooms are best. It’s also a good time to check on your bubbler system.

2. Call me shifty: For boats stored on trailers, jackstands or cradles, ensure the boat hasn’t shifted. Boats on stands/cradles should be level, while those on trailers should be slightly bow up. Boats over 26 feet should have at least three jackstands per side, with plywood under each if the boat is on dirt or gravel — check to see they haven’t moved and are chained together to prevent them from being pushed away from the boat. You know the stands are in the right place when there is no hull deformation at the point of contact. If you see any problems with a jackstand, don’t t…………… continues on Lakenewsonline.com

DNR stresses boating safety following Monday’s lake tragedy

DNR stresses boating safety following Monday’s lake tragedy
News from Access North Georgia:

UNDATED – In light of this week’s deadly boating accident on Lake Lanier, officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are stressing the importance of boating safety… especially after dark.

“You know, we see a lot of accidents during the day, but we see the worst accidents during the night,” said DNR Sgt. Greg Colson.

Colson told Fox 5 News there have been three boating fatalities on the lake so far this year, and all three occurred at night and involved boats.

He also said alcohol is often a factor in boating accidents, including the one that took the life of a 9-year-old boy and his 13-year-old brother on Monday night in the Shoal Creek area of Lake Lanier.

Authorities said the driver of the boat that hit the boat those brothers were riding in has been charged with boating under the influence.

“There’s no reason for somebody to be on this lake drinking and driving a boat,” Colson said. “You see a lot of speed and a lot of people having fun, but if you’re responsible with it, you’re fine.”

Authorities Stress Boating Safety Following Fatal River Accident
News from Patch.com:

An Aliquippa woman was killed and a Robinson Township man injured following a jet ski accident Sunday on the Ohio River.

Melissa Mason, 24, of Aliquippa and Kevin Ludwig, 26, of Robinson Township were both rushed to Heritage Valley Sewickley hospital shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday.

Ludwig was treated and released before 7 p.m. while Mason was pronounced dead at a Pittsburgh hospital, according to Lawrence P. Furlong, assistant supervisor of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Bureau of Law Enforcement.

With Memorial Day—the official start of boating season—quickly approaching, the Fish and Boat Commission, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, are hoping to remind the public about safe recreational boating.

The tragedy at the Dashields Lock and Dam, across the river from Edgeworth and Sewickley, came a day after the May 19 start of
