Owner of derelict boat sought by Coast Guard

Owner of derelict boat sought by Coast Guard
News from KeysNews.com (registration):

Federal investigators are searching for the owner of 53-foot boat leaking diesel fuel and oil into Lake Surprise.

The vessel was partially submerged in four feet of water.

Good Samaritan mariners and Florida Department of Conservation Commission officers reported the boat Saturday and the Coast Guard has been trying to determine how the boat ended up where it did and exactly how much fuel leaked into the water, said Coast Guard Sector Key West Incident Management Division Chief Lt. Michelle Comeaux.

There was no one on board when crews responded, said FWC spokesman Officer Bobby Dube, who called it a derelict vessel.

“We were getting quite a lot of calls about it,” Dube said.

The Coast Guard and FWC have been working with the private company Coffin Marine Services out of Big Pine Key in containing the leak, Comeaux said.

“The FWC let us know the booms we laid down appear to be clean; however, we’re getting reports today (Tuesday) of more oil, so we’ll be investigating that as well,” Comeaux said. “When the FWC first called us, they reported a very bad situation of fuel leaking throughout the vessel.”

Coffin Marine Services had collected about 90 gallons of fuel total by Tuesday, said business owner John Coffin.

“We removed 40 gallons from the vessel and about 50 gallons from the water,” Coffin said. “It was a very…………… continues on KeysNews.com (registration)

Coast Guard searching for boat’s owner

Coast Guard searching for boat’s owner
News from Boston Herald:

The Coast Guard is looking for the owner of an unmanned sailboat that was found ashore on Martha’s Vineyard yesterday.

Officials say they received a call at about 10 p.m. last night for a 13-foot Hobi Cat “wave” model sailboat that was found washed ashore with the sail up and the rudder down.  It was reported to have lines hanging and dirty footprints on the deck.

Boat and air crews from the Coast Guard canvased the area for possible people in the water while local police searched houses to locate the owner.

“A case like this illustrates why it’s extremely important for folks to document their vessels and make them easily identifiable,” said Richard Elliott, the command duty officer at Sector Southeastern New England. “We have multiple crews searching the entire body of water from Naushon Island to Martha’s Vineyard – but we don’t have any additional information about the vessel or its owner.”

Anyone with information about the boat or its owner is urged to call the Southeastern New England Command Center at 508-457-3211.

Coast Guard run promotes boating safety
News from WNCT:

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. – Approximately 120 race participants begin the Run Around the Block 5k event here, May 26, 2012. The event coordinator’s intent for the race was to raise awareness of boating safety by encouraging runners to wear life jackets during the event. U.S. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 1st Class Brandyn Hill.

ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C.–The Coast Guard held a 5k run Saturday to help promote boating safety.  Runners were required to wear life vests throughout the course of the run.  Lt. Grant Thomas, event coordinator and commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Block Island said of the event, “The main purpose of the event is to promote boating safety.”  He went on to say of the event, “Having people run in life jackets was something we were doing to push the safe boating side of things. I’d say about 30 to 40 runners were wearing life jackets, definitely a success there.”

A variety of Coast Guard staff and officers were on hand for the event, as well as authorities with the Atlantic Beach Police Department and Fort Macon State Park.  The whole thing kicked off with a cannon firing to mark the start of the event.  An HC-103 Hercules from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City performed a flyover before the race started.
